Hello everyone!

Like I said in the title of this thread, I am new to the forum.
I am a student at the Kellogg School of Management and I'm conducting a personal research on smartphones in general, and in particular I'm interested in the HTC Hero.

I would be most grateful if you could help me out by answering just a few questions:

1 - What do you value most about your HTC Hero?
2 - What made you choose it over other smartphones?
3 - I've seen a lot of threads complaining about the OS of the phone, but sometimes that can be misleading... Is there a general perception with problems in the OS? And if that is true, do you think the 2.1 version will resolve the issues?
4- Finally, on a more personal level and since I am quite new to the smartphone world, would you recommend another phone by HTC rather than the Hero?

Thanks for the help!!!!

1. Its a smartphone. Android

2. I was offered a really good deal on it. But i guess because it has a capacitive touch screen instead of a resistive (my old smartphone), nice screen size, android, htc.

3. I have no problems with the OS, i first used it with the most recent update (lots of improvements) so i dont know. Im pretty happy with its performance so far. I believe 2.1 will make the phone even better than it already is.

4. I have played with other htc phones running on windows mobile (at&t ones) but i like mine better due to size, android, look, etc.

1 - The phone....need i say more?

2 - To be honest I saw it, read a few reviews and wanted it. The more I research I did the more I wanted it. and now 4 months on i still toy with it as much as possible

3 - Current OS does pose 1 or 2 issue, one of the biggest complaint I have came across is bluetooth FTP is non existant in the Hero, I was aware of this before I signed to it. Also camera quality is kinda poor. These are a few of the issues 2.1 is seemingly going to sort, personally I don't use bluetooth ftp often and have a 12mp camera at home, so those don't bother me too much. Seems however that the 2.1 will be a big improvement to 1.5/1.6

4- No, no and no. However the HTC legend is an enhancement on the hero, will be pre-installed with 2.1 and is due out in the uk in the next few months. Not had a chance to play with it but some research might be handy before hand.

I think it is better to be very capable with technology to be able to take advantage of all the things the phone has to offer. Or at least be willing to do a lot of research. I know my mom would have no clue how to use this phone. Although it is not too difficult to use its basic features.

Rooting has something to do with gaining full access to everything on the phone and applying other ROMs and stuff. I dont know too much about it tho since im too busy to read up on it right now.

I'd say just wait till march/april for the HTC Desire to come out, its faster, more memory and has the new OS out of the box.

The biggest complaint people are having with the OS at the moment is the fragmentation. Hero is stuck on 1.5, so a lot of new apps especially the google ones wont work with it until the updates come along between march/april, those newer apps require 1.6 upwards.

The other major complaint is apps being stored on the phone and not allowing them to be stored on the SD card using up precious memory, though you'd have to have a large list of apps to run out.

Rooting is allowing access to parts of the phone that have been locked off.

for instance, once your phone is rooted you can have custom versions off the OS running on your phone, you can even get 2.1 roms now for the Hero, though everything doesn't work fully on them and the early versions tend to be a bit buggy until they get hold of the original working roms, then they'll make improvements to them.

You can also, have apps stored on the SD Card once you've rooted and get the appropriate software. Plus other things that can be done with the phone which the manufacturers don't allow.

1. I can do pretty much anything on it :)

2. The price is a bit cheaper than the other smartphones (I bought mine from T-Mobile Macedonia), screen sensitivity is excellent, the design is kinda business-looking, and don't get me started about the software...

3. Besides Bluetooth problems, I haven't heard the OS to have a major fault or something, but the good thing is that it is upgradable, and I think the Android guys read the forums and will fix (or make better) the things that the users are complaining about

4. No :)
