Eris discontinued?

What I find particularly interesting about this "rumor" is that it says the Eris is supposed to be replaced by the Incredible, but man, the Incredible seems like such a better device, and I would THINK it comes in at a higher price point. The Eris was supposed to be the "entry level" Android device for Verizon right? Does that mean the Incredible is gonna be cheaper than the Moto Droid? That would be sweet, cause I'm buying it :)

Honestly why should we care? We have ours, it's not like they're not going to support it anymore. Things change, new phones come out, get used to it. The Eris was outdated when it showed up, that's just the way it is.

Exactly. Most people on this forum did not know this was a rebadged Hero until they heard it on here. When the Incredible was announced, it was announced as the successor to the Eris.

While I doubt the Eris will simply vanish come the Incredible, it will slowly be phased out like the Storm was with the Storm 2 and other Blackberry devices. The Eris won't stay at $79.99 with VZW and then simply fall off. More may not be produced, but even that's going a bit too far. It'll gradually come down in price and when it's sold at a break-even price, then you know it's officially going to die.

It still has some life left in the store, but the phone you have now is good to go for another three years, if it had to. Unless you fraudulently claim a new one through insurance, then it's different.

I'm not too worried... My little Eris budddy, Twiki, is my first smartphone but from what I can tell, smartphones are fairly independant of their carriers what with all the mods and rooting going on. Their allegiance is more to their manufacturer if even that in an open source environment. Just because Verizon may not field anymore Eris phones on their shelves doesn't mean they will refuse your money for voice and data plans. Now, if HTC or more to the point Google, said they forsaking the Eris, then I'd worry about getting the WALL-E treatment.

Funny...I still see commercials for the Eris. All that money for marketing and just drop it off shelves? I think not. Like I said before though, I wouldn't be absolutely shocked if the rumor were true.

Yeah, the promos for Eris still run and in print media too, not to mention at the Verizon website.

Those Blackberry folks, great source of info for Android stuff.

I noticed that the reactions at the site, in the little comments area there, are mixed but mostly of a skeptical nature.

There's an OTD there?

Someone is using my name in the comments.

Apparently I said
Really? So Verizon is testing an OS update for the phone right now. An update that they are supposed to have out by the end of Q1 and then the very first day of Q2 they plan to discontinue it? Is that what you are saying? And they plan on doing this on April fools day no less.

And:
April fools jokes are usually mildly funny on April fools. The rest of the year they are childish and rather stupid.
