Sorry but I cant post pics yet but an icon in my task bar is annoying me as i cant find what it is. It looks like a little clothes tag hard to explain. Looked in the manual for icons and it's not their.

I actually meant tag, sorry.

That's the Near Field Communictions Icon. Hit Settings -> More -> NFC (uncheck) and it will disappear.

It may be an ad related thing due to a third party app. If so, Addons Detector, free, should help you find it.

Ah its so the device can transfer data to another one like the bump app by the looks of it.

NFC is similar to Bluetooth, but limited to about a one foot range.

It's being used to make phones serve as credit cards, train tickets and so forth using radio to xfer the information.

You can also get programmable stickers that just contains a code. One of our members has one in his entry way. He gets home, scans it, and his phone runs a program to turn on his entertainment system via wifi. I know of others planning to put one in the car to switch the phone to car mode and turn on Bluetooth, etc.

Others are gearing up to put contact info into business cards so you can automatically enter the new contact.

Pretty handy idea.

It's a way of transferring data between 2 devices without the devices being physically connected (although they do have to be very close together or even touching). For example, if you have a youtube video you want to share with a mate, you'd both activate NFC and the Android Beam application, put your phones back to back, tap the video and it would send a link to their handset, or open the youtube app displaying the vid.

If you've Google wallet installed, you can use it to pay for stuff at certain places (much like the Barclay Cards you see advertised over here). When it was demoed, they showed some guy swiping his phone across a movie poster which brought up the youtube trailer to the film the poster advertised.

You can also buy programmable tags which will activate certain states in your phone. So for example, you could place one on your desk at night and program it so that when your phone is in close proximity of the tag, it switches to silent mode.
