***Official Galaxy Nexus Pre-Release speculation thread**

Who would have EVER thought we would know NOTHING official by Thanksgiving. Huh. Oh well.

Amazing, isn't it? Remember when we were supposed to have this phone in our hands 3 WEEKS AGO!?

I still remember being so excited with everybody else. "It's a NEXUS phone! Verizon can't screw up a freaking Nexus phone!"

Two VZW bloatware apps and no release date in site a month after it was announced and with it launching elsewhere in the world...

400MB worth?! The Nexus S used the same SGX540 chip (clocked much lower) and only had 512MB total to play with. The GNex' framebuffer fits in 4MB, so I'm not sure why it'd need 100's of MB permanently reserved for system functions. Also if the NAND is memory mapped then it'd occupy address space but wouldn't need any backing RAM, right?

I'm wondering maybe the 300-400MB is soft-allocated caches & buffers that the OS would gradually relinquish if memory pressure gets high from running apps.

N.B. The Nexus S Hummingbird (now renamed) did not have the separate video processing core that the OMAP 4460 has. ;)

In addition to the framebuffer, there are conceivably a number of other buffer allocations for video processing. (As well as compression/decompression buffers and HD scaling buffers.)

And you don't want to memory map graphics or IO to nand flash memory - in addition to speed issues there are write-cycle issues vs. reliability lifetime to contend with - you want that all stuff strictly in ram if you have it.

As for dynamic allocation, naturally, I have no clue on that.

And - we don't know it's 400 MB - because of the utility itself, it could be 300 or even much lower - example that we don't know - does the utility rope off the low-water marks?

Like the Intel GPU I mentioned earlier (used in my HTPC for example) seeing 150 MB or more allocated for video memory is somehow not uncommon to me. To be honest, I never thought about the specifics of the allocation - for me, it was a black box: the designers called for it, it works, I have sufficient free ram.

You can always get this now!

Gee, that was one solid phone. That was back in the day when a phone was a phone. :)

I have this sitting in my closet in a box along with all of the other forgotten phones of yesteryear. I should really post a pic sometime, I have quite a collection.

I never realized how much I didn't care about American football, until I had it shoved in my face while looking for information about a cellphone.

Somewhat off topic chatter is allowed in this thread. Launch threads are more like lounges, and get closed once the phone is released.

If you just want infomation, post #1 contains all the most up to date info available. Steven does a good job updating it.

I had the phone one generation before this one. This one was super cool compared the other older one. Remember snakes? ;)

Snake was awesome! That kept me entertained for an entire car ride from Jersey to Georgia when I was a kid.

Off of the top of my head, I also had the model before this one, this specific one, the color one that had the flip out full qwerty keyboard, a Erickson candybar phone (first phone on ATT Wireless with a WAP browser/internet portal), a T-Mobile PocketPC Phone Edition (believe that was a Siemens SX55? Something like that), black Moto RAZR, T-Mobile MDA (some kind of generic HTC WinMo phone), HTC Dream (using this now, since I sold my Vibrant), and the Samsung Vibrant.

I'm probably forgetting a couple. I have most of them saved. Some work, some don't. Most of them I carrier unlocked, not that it matters much anymore.

Plus there was this morning's PSA that a little off-topic is OK, but too much and it maybe needs to go into the Lounge.

And Han's helpful suggestion to label football chatter as "Off topic" and then put it under hide tags.

We have had pages about Star Wars and the Hotel Nexasaurus but what is fun and Lounge-y for some eventually gets grating for others.

We all need to be cool on that. :) ;)

Football is a big deal in America - but we don't want Nexus news to break out in the middle of a football thread. ;)

I usually don't comment about stuff like that, cuz there's surely some off-topic posts of mine that not everybody appreciates (and even on-topic stuff like CPUs and megapixels!), but... I hear ya.

I have to disagree, If I start to read a football thread tomorrow and in the middle of it some GOOD Nexus news breaks out, such as being able to order it online, I would be perfectly fine with it.:D

Although to be fair, although I will be rooting for the Cowboys to win on Thursday I am unlikely to be perusing any football threads.

Whats the news with your source Steven? Haven't heard any updates recently.

Haven't heard anything since Monday. The source said that there was debate in the ranks. Certain vzw's wanted it out by black Friday, but most did not and it looks like the early December date is true.

sorry, talking football is like breathing for most Americans, just a part of life, it seems relevant to any discussion.
we sometimes forget others dont share our passion
