As a teacher, I can assure you the sentence "Where you be at?" is not proper. I wouldn't tolerate it in class, and no, Ebonics is NOT a dialect. There is no country that speaks that language. I thought it was moronic that CA was trying to have it added as a language, and wanted it taught.

Lol... The angles saxons and jutes really disagree with your perspective of language... as a teacher.... Oh.. And do some research about ebonics. No school system or politician ever espoused teaching it. They wanted it recognized (by linguists and the federal govt.) as a codified language for the purposes of acquiring federal ESL funding. Are you an art teacher by chance?

A teacher friend of mine has a South African passport, she was born in Durban. She is white, has blonde hair and speaks English with no detectable SA accent. She as a master's degree. You'd think she was from Oxford or something. Spent much of her life in London. However the difficulty she's had in finding a good teaching position here. Sends off her resume/CV and a picture of her SA passport, many of the schools just don't want to know, sometimes they don't even bother replying. She's also had difficulty in getting a long term work visa as well, could be that's political though. Maybe Beijing doesn't like Pretoria or something?

I know a couple of Australian and NZ teachers that have have difficulty in finding good positions, usual reason given is that students can't understand their dialects.

No, BA in Child Psychology and Masters in N-6 with specialties in math and special ed. So....is it better to recognize Ebonics ("Where you be at? I is waiting for you...") as a codified language and teach it to people born and raised here as a second language? I taught ESL to children from Uzbekistan back in 1990. They were brought here by an Orthodox Jewish foundation. They needed English as a second language. Not someone who is born and raised here, taught in our public school system from the age of 5 (or if your school has an early childhood program, age 3!) by teachers who are usually required to have a Masters Degree.

The children (and their parents) that I have met who decry Ebonics as their native language are just wrong. Ebonics is not native anywhere on Long Island. Or Jamaica, Queens. Or Harlem. Or even the Bronx! Do not come to me from there and say you need special services (as ESL is) because you only learned Ebonics at home. You parents are from Jamaica, Queens, not the Country. They were taught English as a first language. It should be taught to child as well. Federal Funding to teach your native language because you say it is foreign? Get a grip.

I know plenty of children taught their parents native language at home. Parents may not even speak a word of English (another thing that really grinds my gears....). However, once these children enter school, most learn the language naturally, as it is taught. Most do not need ESL, but it is available for those that do, for a period of time. Many kids are bilingual. Find me a country where Ebonics is the native language. Then we can add it to the list of recognized languages that federal funding provides ESL for......

What also grinds my gears is when stupid people think South Africa is filled to the brim with stupid racists and fools and only remember us as a racist country when we are soooo freaking much more than that!!!!

They think we are all scum but that is just not true!!!!

I'm just wondering if it's not so much accent, but whatever other languages have been adopted into your English. Some must use quite a few Boer words that have made their way in -

New Zealand probably has Maori, Australia something else.

Even here, those living in Hawaii might lace speech with Hawaiian words.

We have a lot of Spanish here (which do get mispronounced, badly) which mean nothing to someone from New England.

America and Australia were once penal colonies, and a lot of the basics survived from that time. Lack of communication fostered the differences.

my absolute biggest pet peeve and it friggin infuriates me is something that I think only goes on here in Tennessee.

People will be coming up to an intersection and they realize they have missed their turn, instead of doing what all effing normal people do and going to the next stop and turning around... they will literally STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAMN ROAD until their "lane" is clear and they can turn left/right into it. No kidding, they will dead stop in the road.

How in the hell there aren't as many accidents as there should be is pure, dumb luck.
