What up folks!

I'm getting my father in law a Gnex this week. It's so much easier to just add him to my plan, and cheaper!

So with all the phones out there, he wants the Nexus. Good price tag right now too $0.

I'll be dropping in to figure out root and what the options are.

It doesn't matter if I update for rooting purposes correct? This phone is unlocked, no worries on taking OTAs and having an exploit closed, correct?

As soon as I have it in the house its getting rooted and custom'd out.

It's gonna be awesome!

Time to get some bars on my windows Also you will not find an easier phone to root. I suggest using Terminal/Command Line to root it instead of using one click methods. It is already supper easy and it gives you a little more of an understanding of how the phone works.

Your father-in-law chose a great phone (as you know)! As for accepting OTA's and exploits closing, that's a non-issue w/ the GNex. It will always be this easy to root or reroot after accepting an update.

I was under that impression, but wanted to be sure.

And to be completely honest, bars won't keep me out Urge.

Jose is going to freak when I give it to him on Christmas. He wants it, but doesn't know I'm getting it for him.

Haha I'll have to find something to keep you out, don't know if such a thing exist though. I'm glad to see another OG Evo making there way over to our little corner of AF, even if the phone technically isn't theirs. Another really popular ROM a lot of us are using is the unofficial AOKP 4.2 build.

Currently on JB Sourcery 4.0. It's an exceptional 4.2 ROM, and it's running better than Unofficial AOKP (YMMV of course).

Typically I would agree with that statement, but lately it's been making my phone hot reboot at least 1-2 times a day....Had to switch. Also, it seems as of late, that his kernel (for our device) isn't being updated as often as it used to be in the past.

I'm liking Franco's kernel a lot so far and the Sourcery rom is freaking incredible. The stock kernel for it is actually really good. No custom kernel is needed honestly.

You wouldn't be missing out on anything really. I'm on 4.2 pretty much just for the sake of keeping current.

Sorry to hear that. Trinity has been good for me. Is the most stable and yields the best battery life for my phone. I do agree that trinity development has slowed.

OK, I almost got it rooted tonight, didn't quite make it.

One question:

I tried to enter the bootloader with the phone plugged in, it killed it. I had to pull the battery to get it to boot up afterward. Is that normal?

I'll hopefully get this done tomorrow, hopefully...

Hmmm not sure. I don't think so. Adb reboot bootloader is the command to reboot if you want to do it that way. It never gave me any issues.

It never entered the bootloader. Screen went black, then the phone wouldn't respond. Wouldn't even power on until I pulled the battery.

Strangness, LOL. I'll contilue tonight if I get a chance.

I manually put mine in bootloader, just hold down all the buttons. Sometimes the ADB command will be a little wonky.

This is what I was doing. Volume up and down and power, while plugged in via USB.

I just got home from work, very wet and cold day here in the Burgh, not sure if I'll be able to get to the phone tonight. We'll see.

It can't be plugged in, you have to put it in bootloader then plug it in.
